Getting to the Snowy Mountains
Coach:
The most direct route by road is via Canberra. Greyhound have
frequent coach services from Sydney and Melbourne to Canberra. Countrylink buses operate daily between Canberra and Cooma and Snowliner have a school day service between Cooma and Jindabyne.
By Train:
Countrylink trains have a daily train from Sydney Central to Canberra.
From Melbourne travel on Vline trains and buses to Cooma.
By Air:
Fly to the Snowy Mountains from Sydney with Aeropelican and take the
airport shuttle to Jindabyne.
By Car:
All seasons road access is via Canberra and Cooma. Other roads indicated on the map from Albury and Gundagai are mountainous (but beautiful!) and can be closed by snow in winter. The Barry Way due south of Jindabyne towards Victoria is partly unsealed. See rentnewcars.com.au for car rental.
By Bicycle:
Heading south from Canberra we recommend you take the road (partly
unsealed) through the Namadgi National Park in the south of the ACT to
Adaminaby rather than the Snowy Mountains Highway to Cooma. The
Namadgi road is longer and is much hillier but more scenic, less
trafficked, shadier and less exposed to the wind. Note that it isn't
indicated on the map below. Most roads and tracks in the Snowies are
great for cycling. |
